MILAN: On the evening of 6 February, Italy opened its Winter Games with a ceremony that sought to merge metropolitan scale with alpine identity, placing Milan at the centre of a project shared across an entire territory. Inside San Siro, before tens of thousands of spectators and a vast global television audience, the Olympic ritual unfolded with the precision of protocol and the theatricality expected from a country that lives comfortably between opera and design.

The creative concept, presented under the title Armonia, revolved around connection. From the first sequences, light, music and choreography worked to compress distance between the fashion capital and the Dolomites, between tradition and modernity, between elite competition and collective celebration. The organisers leaned heavily on visual storytelling, projecting winter landscapes, urban geometries and fragments of cultural memory across the stadium architecture.

When the Parade of Nations began, the tone shifted from spectacle to humanity. Nearly three thousand athletes crossed the arena floor, some filming the moment, others visibly overwhelmed, many wrapped in flags against the February cold. Established sporting powers received roaring welcomes, yet some of the warmest applause was reserved for smaller delegations and newcomers, a reminder that visibility is one of the rare currencies the Olympics distributes equally.

Music shaped the emotional arc of the night. International pop met Italian melody, classical voices blended with contemporary staging, and the programme moved fluently between grandeur and intimacy. Familiar themes drew the loudest reactions, particularly when the stadium joined in, turning performance into participation.

The institutional core of the evening arrived with the entrance of President Sergio Mattarella. After the Olympic flag was raised, representatives of the athletes, judges and coaches delivered the traditional oaths, reaffirming commitments to fairness at a moment when the geopolitical background of global sport often feels anything but simple. With the formal declaration, the Games were open.

Attention then narrowed to the question every host guards most carefully: the last metres of the torch relay. The flame entered to mounting anticipation, carried by figures chosen to bridge generations of Italian sporting history. When the cauldron ignited, the release of sound inside the stadium was physical, a mixture of relief and pride after years of preparation.

In a gesture unique to these Games, a second cauldron was lit in Cortina d’Ampezzo, reinforcing the dual soul of the event. The image of fire in both city and mountains served as a visual manifesto for the dispersed model Italy has adopted, one built more on coordination than concentration.

By the time fireworks dissolved above Milan, ceremony had given way to anticipation. Training schedules, medal tables and rivalries would take over within hours. Yet for one night, choreography replaced competition, and the country presented itself as host, mediator and storyteller, inviting the world to inhabit its winter.
