    Prince Andrew’s new scandal: A Chinese spy

    A suspected Chinese government influence operation has highlighted the access Yang Tengbo, an alleged Chinese spy, had to two former British prime ministers, David Cameron and Theresa May.

    Photographs of Yang, 50, standing alongside Cameron and May were showcased during an award ceremony in 2019 hosted by Huarenbang, or the “Chinese People’s List,” an organization with reported ties to Beijing’s United Front Work Department. This department is known for conducting covert intelligence and influence activities abroad, according to Western governments.

    Yang, who has been linked to U.K. high society, including Prince Andrew, was recently identified in court documents as an alleged spy. He was barred from entering the U.K. last week after MI5 labeled him a national security risk, citing his potential to leverage relationships with prominent British figures for political interference on behalf of the Chinese Communist Party (CCP).

    The award ceremony, where Yang received the “Most Achieved Chinese Award,” is held annually and often attended by United Front-linked officials. Experts suggest these events serve as platforms for the United Front to expand its influence and target high-level individuals. Yang’s award presentation included photos of him with Cameron, May, and other U.K. figures, symbolizing his access to elite circles.

    One such photo, broadcast on Chinese state television in 2019, depicted Yang with Cameron and his wife. Yang boasted about attending a 2013 Chinese New Year reception at 10 Downing Street hosted by Cameron, which he claimed was pivotal to his business success in China. The program further detailed how Yang used this connection to assist a U.K. businessman in establishing operations in Shanghai, subsequently broadening his own network.

    Another image presented at the ceremony showed Yang with Theresa May and her husband, Philip. However, May’s office has denied any recollection of meeting Yang or being involved in the photograph.

    Yang’s ties to Prince Andrew were also highlighted during the ceremony. Yang reportedly facilitated a Chinese project linked to Andrew, raising concerns about the potential exploitation of such relationships for CCP influence operations.

    Responding to the allegations, Yang denied any wrongdoing, attributing the accusations to shifting geopolitical tensions. In a public statement, he asserted his innocence and expressed dismay over being targeted despite a lack of conclusive evidence.

    Cheryl Yu, a scholar on CCP influence operations, noted that figures like Yang are integral to Beijing’s United Front strategy, designed to embed Chinese narratives and interests in democratic societies. The Chinese Embassy in London dismissed the accusations as part of an anti-China campaign aimed at disrupting normal relations between the two nations.

    The revelations surrounding Yang and his connections to U.K. elites have intensified scrutiny over China’s influence strategies, underscoring the need for greater vigilance in safeguarding democratic institutions from foreign interference.
