    Israel strikes Hodeida, Yemen in retaliation to Houthi attach

    Israeli warplanes conducted airstrikes in the Houthi-controlled Yemeni port city of Hodeida, killing three people, according to statements from the Iran-backed Houthi rebels. The airstrikes were in retaliation for a Houthi drone attack on Tel Aviv, which killed a civilian and breached Israel’s air defenses.

    Mohammed Abdulsalam, a senior Houthi official, condemned the Israeli strikes on social media, describing them as a “brutal Israeli aggression against Yemen.” He claimed the attacks targeted fuel storage facilities and a power plant in Hodeida as part of an effort to pressure Yemen to cease its support for Palestinians in the ongoing Gaza conflict.

    The Axios news outlet, citing U.S. and Israeli officials, confirmed that the Israeli airstrikes were a direct response to the Houthi drone strike on Tel Aviv. The Houthi-run health ministry reported casualties and injuries from the strikes but did not specify the number. According to a statement aired by the Houthi-controlled Al Masirah television, several people suffered severe burns as a result of the airstrikes.

    Footage broadcast by Al Masirah, which  could not be independently verify, showed a massive blaze along the seafront, with thick black smoke billowing into the sky. Sources in Hodeida reported hearing multiple large explosions and witnessing smoke rising over the port. The attack caused fuel pumps across the city to shut down, according to the correspondent.

    Hodeida has been heavily impacted by a series of airstrikes carried out by British and U.S. forces since January, in response to a campaign of attacks by Houthi rebels on commercial shipping in the Red Sea. The Houthis, who claim to be supporting Palestinians in the Gaza war, have targeted at least 88 commercial vessels since November, focusing on ships they believe are linked to Israel.
