Tajani visits Lebanon after a visit to Damascus

Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani recently visited Beirut, Lebanon to meet Lebanon’s newly elected President, Joseph Aoun after a visit to Syria to meet with Syria’s new rulers. The visit marked a significant moment for Lebanon, which had been without a president for more than two years due to political gridlock. Aoun, formerly the commander of the Lebanese Army, was elected with strong parliamentary support, securing 99 out of 128 votes. His election is seen as a turning point for Lebanon, offering hope for stability and progress.

During the meeting, Tajani commended Aoun’s leadership and emphasized the importance of this new chapter in Lebanon’s history. He highlighted Italy’s ongoing commitment to supporting Lebanon, particularly during a time of regional shifts. Tajani expressed optimism that Aoun’s presidency could pave the way for enhanced cooperation both within Lebanon and across the Middle East.

Tajani’s visit to Lebanon was part of a broader Middle East diplomatic tour, which also included a stop in Syria. In Damascus, he met with Syrian leadership following significant political changes in the country. The Italian foreign minister advocated for re-evaluating European Union sanctions on Syria, proposing a temporary suspension to allow for a reassessment of the evolving political situation.

In Beirut, Tajani reaffirmed Italy’s support for Lebanon’s stability and development, particularly in addressing the challenges of economic recovery and regional security. President Aoun, for his part, expressed his commitment to ensuring stability in southern Lebanon and fostering Lebanon’s role as a key player in regional affairs.

Tajani’s efforts reflect Italy’s broader strategy to contribute to peace and prosperity in the Middle East. His visit underscores the importance of diplomatic engagement and international cooperation in navigating the region’s complex challenges and opportunities.
