Trump bombs Somalia, declares war against ISIS

WASHINGTON D.C: U.S. President Donald Trump announced that he had ordered military airstrikes targeting a senior attack planner and other members of the Islamic State (ISIS) group in Somalia.

“These killers, who we found hiding in caves, threatened the United States and our Allies,” Trump posted on social media. “The strikes destroyed the caves they live in and killed many terrorists without harming civilians in any way.”

Somalia’s presidential office confirmed they had been informed of the U.S. operation, which targeted senior IS leadership in the country’s north. In a statement, the office of Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud acknowledged the United States’ “unwavering support” in counterterrorism efforts and welcomed continued cooperation under Trump’s leadership. The statement also highlighted the strong security partnership between the two nations in combating extremist threats.

U.S. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth said the airstrikes, conducted in the Golis Mountains in northern Somalia, resulted in the deaths of multiple IS operatives without civilian casualties. “These strikes further degrade IS’s ability to plot and conduct terrorist attacks,” Hegseth stated. “This sends a clear signal that the United States always stands ready to find and eliminate terrorists.”

Trump criticized the previous administration, asserting that the U.S. military had targeted this IS planner for years but that President Joe Biden and his administration failed to act decisively. “I did!” Trump declared.

The Islamic State rose to prominence in the 2010s, particularly in Syria and Iraq, but its influence is now largely confined to parts of Africa. The Somali branch of IS, established in 2015 by defectors from al-Shabab, is known for extorting local communities and carrying out small-scale attacks.

In 2023, under Biden’s directive, U.S. forces killed IS leader Bilal al-Sudani and ten of his operatives in a similar operation in northern Somalia.
