Can Kim Kardashian Transform From Cultural Symbol to Genuine Role Model?

For most of her public life, Kim Kardashian has courted controversy with the same intensity that she has courted fame. Yet as a businesswoman, she has also courted extraordinary success, not only for herself, but for her family as a global brand. She understood the mechanics of celebrity culture better than almost anyone else of her generation and transformed herself into one of the most recognizable and influential people on the planet through sheer persistence, branding instinct, and relentless work ethic. And none of that came easily.

In her early career, Kim Kardashian mastered the cultural currents of the 1990s and 2000s, like the obsession with glamour, luxury, image, scandal, and hyper-visibility, and turned them into an empire. And even though millions have tried to imitate that formula, almost none succeeded, at least not to the level as Kim. And in many ways, she became the embodiment of modern celebrity itself.

But there has always been a criticism attached to her rise, and not without reason. The lifestyle she projected often appeared shallow and excessively materialistic, and so to many critics, she became the poster child for a society drifting toward vanity over values, appearance over substance, and influence without responsibility. Parents worried about the example being set for young girls, and spoke about moral decay, all the while adding to her fame, which became symbolic of a culture increasingly obsessed with superficiality.

And yet, something interesting has happened over the last several years as Kim Kardashian has attempted to transition into becoming a lawyer.

Not performatively, and not for a photoshoot or for a headline (at least I hope not). But she has put herself through the grind of legal study, repeated examinations, public failures, and relentless scrutiny, and took multiple attempts to pass California’s “baby bar” examination before finally succeeding. Then came the far more difficult challenge of the full bar examination,  a hurdle that has humbled many intelligent and accomplished people, including herself. And now she has reportedly indicated that she may take at least a year-long break.

And the meaning of that decision matters.

If this break is intended for serious study, reflection, and renewed preparation to finally pass the bar, then I believe we may be witnessing genuine growth and perseverance from someone the world has long underestimated. In that case, Kim Kardashian has an opportunity to evolve from a symbol of celebrity excess into something far more meaningful. That being an actual role model for Gen Z, Z-lennials, and Gen Alpha who are themselves trying to navigate the difficult transition into adulthood.

Because adulthood has never been about curated perfection, but involves failure, discipline, humility, and continuing after embarrassment. Anyone can look successful when life is easy, but the true measure of a person has always been how they respond when they fail publicly and still continue forward.

On the other hand, if this pause is rooted in discouragement or disillusionment, and if she ultimately walks away because the challenge became too difficult, then her critics will feel vindicated, and will say the legal journey was merely another accessory to enhance a carefully crafted public image. They will claim that she simply lacked the depth to follow through, and for this reason I sincerely hope that is not the case.

Because this moment presents Kim Kardashian with a rare opportunity that very few public figures ever receive: the chance to fundamentally redefine herself. No amount of wealth, fame, beauty, influence, or social media power can buy passage through one of the hardest professional examinations in the world. Money can buy many things like comfort, access, and publicity, but it cannot buy competence, discipline, endurance, or intellectual resilience. And there is an irony that her greatest hurdle should be entry into the legal fraternity as the law is said to humble everyone equally.

That is precisely why this journey matters. If Kim Kardashian perseveres through repeated setbacks and eventually succeeds, it would resonate far beyond celebrity gossip or entertainment news. It would demonstrate to millions of young women, especially those who modeled themselves after her image and lifestyle, that reinvention is possible, and that a person is not forever trapped by the shallowest version of themselves. And perhaps most importantly, it would show an entire generation that failure is not fatal.

We live in an era where young people increasingly fear imperfection, as social media has build an online community that rewards instant success and punishes visible struggle. But real achievement rarely arrives cleanly. It comes through disappointment, repetition, sacrifice, and persistence. If Kim Kardashian can publicly endure failure after failure and still continue pursuing something meaningful, that may ultimately become more influential than any fashion trend or reality television empire she ever created.

Ironically, the very woman once criticized as the face of superficial culture now has the opportunity to become an example of resilience and personal transformation.

That would be truly iconic. And whether people love her or hate her, I believe we should all be rooting for that outcome.
